We are writing this in front of a fire on a snowy January night reflecting on our 40 years in Homer, Alaska. We can look out over Kachemak Bay and see the lights of the cod fishing boat our son Ben works on in the winters. We live on a beautiful 15-acre farm that now includes peonies. We have always used organic farming practices as we believe healthy soil produces healthy flowers. We continually nurture the soil food web, using no pesticides, herbicides or any chemical that could potentially pollute water sources on our farm or downhill from us. Our other business is taking charter sport fishermen out on Kachemak Bay for halibut, salmon, lingcod and rockfish. Because all of us use the bay we are very conscientious about not allowing any toxins to leach into its waters.

On any clear day during the summer months while we are working in the peony fields we can see St. Augustine volcano, Kachemak Bay and the Kenai Mountain range. We have been visited many times by moose, Sandhill cranes and the occasional black bear, porcupine and lynx. Sometimes wandering through the fields as we work.

It’s a great place to be raising peonies here on the Last Frontier. Our peonies grow large and healthy in the long Alaskan summer daylight. The stems are harvested from the field directly into our onsite chiller within minutes insuring a fresh quality product.
